What to keep in mind
Most authentic islands are often the hardest to reach and the most seasonal. Many have no international airport and need a domestic flight plus a ferry of 4 to 9 hours from Athens, with only a few sailings a week. Direct UK flights are rare and usually only April to October, and high winds can delay boats.
On the ground, things are simpler and run on local time. Accommodation is mainly small guesthouses and rooms to rent rather than luxury resorts, and buses, taxis and hire cars are limited and must be booked ahead for July and August. Beaches tend to be pebbly and unorganised with no shade or bar, and shops, ATMs and pharmacies cluster in the main town and often shut for siesta.
