Who it suits and why

Best for travellers who want to go beyond the usual map. These islands suit those who are happy with one or two villages, family-run rooms, and days that revolve around swimming, walking, and eating where the locals eat. Ideal if you value quiet and authenticity over choice.

Less suited to those who want comfort, variety, and easy logistics. If you want boutique hotels, beach clubs, shopping, or a daily choice of boat trips and restaurants, a more popular island will be a much better fit.

What to keep in mind

Obscure means limited and seasonal access. Most have no airport and are served by only a few ferries a week, often with long crossings from Athens. In low season, sailings can drop to once a week or stop altogether, and cancellations due to wind are common.

On the ground, infrastructure is very basic. You will find few hotels with reception or room service, often just studios, and limited ATMs, petrol, and medical care, usually only in the main port. Public transport is rare, so a car or scooter is essential, and most beaches have no sunbeds, shade, or facilities at all.
