Who it suits and why
Best for travellers who want beauty without the crowds. These islands suit those who love clear water, wild coves, and little harbour villages where life moves slowly. Ideal if you prefer a simple room, a good taverna, and a beach you walk to, rather than resorts and beach clubs.
Less suited to those who want polished holidays with lots of choice. If you want luxury hotels, pools with a view, organised beaches with sunbed service, shopping, and a full menu of boat trips and tours, you will have more options on a better-known beautiful island.
What to keep in mind
The most beautiful unknown islands stay unknown because they are hard to get to. Most have no airport and rely on infrequent ferries, often only 2 to 4 times a week from Athens with 5 to 10 hour crossings. Outside June to September, direct flights from the UK stop and connections become much more complicated.
Facilities are very limited. You will find family-run studios rather than hotels, a handful of tavernas instead of restaurants, and often only one ATM, pharmacy and petrol station in the main port. You will need a car or scooter to reach beaches, and most beaches are completely unorganised with no sunbeds, bars, or natural shade.
