Least crowded Greek islands in August

Least crowded Greek islands in August

Least crowded Greek islands in August are islands that remain quiet even at the height of summer, when elsewhere ports overflow and beach beds fill by morning, here you still find sleepy harbours, half-empty quays with fishing nets drying in the sun and long afternoons where the loudest sound is the cicadas.

They are islands where August feels like a private summer, with hidden pebbled coves reached by dusty paths, villages that keep their slow, local pace despite the season, simple tavernas where the owner has time to sit and chat, and evenings cooled by meltemi winds under vast, starry skies far from any crowd, creating that rare sense of escape when most of Greece is full.

Who it suits and why

Best for travellers who want August sun without August crowds. These islands suit those who love peak summer heat, warm seas and still finding space – headed by Anafi, Donoussa, Irakleia, Schinoussa, Kimolos, Sikinos, Kassos, Kastellorizo and Fourni where even in the busiest week of August you can swim in a cove with no one else. Ideal if you want tavernas without a waitlist and nights that are calm, not clubbed.

Less suited to those who want full service and buzz in high summer. If you want direct August flights, large resorts with pools, beach clubs, hundreds of restaurants and late nightlife, these least crowded islands in August will feel too quiet, too basic and too difficult when the rest of Greece is packed.

What to keep in mind

August is the absolute peak, even on quiet islands, so book early. None have international airports, so you fly to Athens or a hub with 3 to 4.5 hour UK flights then take ferries of 4 to 12 hours, often only 2 to 4 times a week, and rooms are small family guesthouses that still sell out in August because beds are so limited.

On the ground expect true high summer. August means 31 to 36 degrees, UV 9 to 10, sea at 25 to 27 degrees and the strong meltemi north wind in the Cyclades which can delay ferries, while buses are rare and beaches are unorganised with no sunbeds, bars or shade. Bring SPF 50, cash, water and hat, and leave buffer days around ferries as cancellations are common in mid August.
