Best for travellers who want variety without long days at sea. Island hopping suits curious explorers who love a new harbour every 2 to 3 days – headed by the Cyclades for Paros, Naxos, Sifnos, Milos, Santorini and Mykonos with 30 minute to 3 hour fast ferries, plus the Ionian for Corfu, Paxos, Lefkada, Kefalonia and Zakynthos linked by 1 to 2 hour ferries, and the Dodecanese for Rhodes, Symi and Kos. Ideal if you want a mix of beaches, white villages, food markets and sunset spots in one trip.
Less suited to those who want one hotel and zero packing. If you dislike ferries, early port starts, living out of a suitcase, or summer winds that can delay boats in July and August, hopping will feel too rushed and too logistical for a true unwind.
What to keep in mind
Routes work best when islands are close. Cyclades hopping uses hubs Paros and Naxos with daily Blue Star and SeaJets ferries of 45 minutes to 2.5 hours from April to October, Ionian hopping is calmest May to early June and September, and Dodecanese hopping is easiest from Rhodes. All groups have direct UK flights of 3 to 4.5 hours to key islands plus Athens as a backup hub.
On the ground book ferries 2 to 3 days ahead in August, travel light as you carry bags on and off fast, choose 3 nights minimum per island to avoid ferry fatigue, and have a buffer day before flights home in case of meltemi winds. Carry cash for small ports, check ferry times change daily and avoid backtracking – go in one direction like Paros to Naxos to Milos to Santorini, not zig zagging.
