Greek islands with no cats
There are only a few Greek islands with no cats but these islands (like Keros, Polyagios, Gyaros, Andros, Kato Koufonisi etc.). However there are islands with very few cats like Anafi, Astypalaia, Tilos and Chalki. Cats tend to follow people and populations, so this rules out the majoririty of hotspot islands. Naturally, there are islands with zero cats, because these islands are essentially uninhabited.

They are islands where the streets feel emptier in a subtle way, with fewer rustles in the bins, fewer shadows slipping between tables, and that unusual, slightly too-tidy feeling of a Greek island missing one of its most familiar, free-roaming residents.
| Island | Description |
|---|---|
| Despotiko | Uninhabited archaeological islet west of Antiparos, no water or residents. |
| Polyaigos | Largest uninhabited island in Cyclades, private, no permanent settlement. |
| Keros | Uninhabited, protected archaeological site, no ferry or food source. |
| Anydros | Uninhabited rock east of Amorgos, no anchorage or buildings. |
| Kato Koufonisi | Uninhabited part of Koufonisia, only day boats. |
| Gyaros | Uninhabited former prison island, off-limits Natura 2000. |
| Antimilos | Uninhabited volcano northwest of Milos, no water. |
| Strongyli | Uninhabited rock near Kastellorizo at Megisti. |
| Ro | Tiny uninhabited islet with only a lighthouse keeper memorial. |
| Saria | Uninhabited north of Karpathos, nature reserve. |
| Alimia | Uninhabited between Rhodes and Halki, WW2 wreck bay only. |
| Levitha | Uninhabited with 4-person family taverna seasonally, no village cats. |
| Astypalaia | Remote Dodecanese butterfly-shaped island that is very dry and windy with just one Chora, so cats are concentrated only around the port and not roaming every beach like in Paros. |
| Anafi | With under 300 residents and name literally meaning without snakes, it’s similarly tiny for cats, and you can hike all day seeing maybe one cat near Agios Nikolaos port. |
| Tilos | Officially an eco island with a managed TNR program that keeps the colony small, vaccinated and fed in a dedicated area away from Livadia hotels. |
| Chalki | Only 400 residents and almost no trash tourism, so the few cats stay in Emporio village and don’t sleep on taverna chairs like in Cyclades hotspots. |
| Kastellorizo | Most isolated inhabited Greek island, 2km from Turkey, with under 300 residents where locals know every cat by sight because there are so few. |
| Psara | North Aegean tiny island with population decline, no mass tourism and therefore almost no stray feeding spots beyond the single port. |
| Antikythera | Only about 40 permanent residents and famous for its bird observatory, meaning human food waste is minimal and cats are rare by the port. |
| Gavdos | Europe’s southernmost point with under 100 year-round people living in camps, so there are maybe a handful of cats near Sarakiniko tavernas, not hundreds. |
| Meganisi | Small Ionian island with spread-out villages and no dense alleys, so cats are far less visible than in Cycladic Choras. |
| Kythira | Large but sparsely populated with villages kilometers apart, so while cats exist, you are not tripping over them in every alley like Sifnos. |
| Kalamos | Tiny Ionian islet with under 500 people and no big hotels, so cat population is proportionally small and shy around fishermen. |
| Kastos | Even smaller than Kalamos with just one village and one harbor, so cats are limited to the harbor fishing boats. |
| Mathraki | Diapontia island with under 200 residents where cats are limited to the single village street. |
| Erikoussa | Northernmost Diapontia island with similar story of a small community keeping a small, non-roaming cat colony. |
| Othonoi | Largest Diapontia but still only 200 residents in winter, so cats are few and stay near Ammos port. |
Who it suits and why
Best for travellers who love cats or want to understand why they are everywhere. There are no Greek islands with no cats – every inhabited island from Crete, Rhodes, Corfu and Santorini to tiny Hydra, Symi, Patmos and Lipsi has large stray and village cat populations cared for by locals and tavernas. Islands suit cat lovers who enjoy friendly harbour cats, monastery cats and beach cats, headed by Syros with the famous cat sanctuary, Mykonos with windmill cats, Santorini with caldera cats and Hydra with harbour cats that follow you to cafes. Ideal if you want photos, gentle company and to support local feeders.
Less suited to those with severe cat allergies or phobia who hope to avoid them entirely. If you need zero cat contact, no food begging at tables and no cats on sunbeds, Greek islands will be challenging as cats are in old towns, ports and restaurants May to October, so you will need to plan for allergy management not avoidance.
What to keep in mind
Cats are part of Greek island life and protected. Greek islands have Trap Neuter Return programmes but populations remain high, especially in tourist areas where food is plentiful. You cannot find a cat free island, even small car free Hydra or remote Anafi have colony cats, and winter counts stay similar as locals feed year round.
On the ground plan for coexistence. Choose newer hotels away from harbour feeding spots if allergic, request high floor rooms, carry antihistamine and wipes, avoid feeding as it encourages crowding, and do not approach kittens. If you love cats, bring small sachets for sanctuary donations rather than feeding directly. All islands have direct UK flights of 3 to 4.5 hours or ferries of 1 to 8 hours from Athens, and pharmacies and clinics in main towns carry allergy support if needed.
