Who it suits and why
Best for travellers who put the beach first. These islands suit those who love long swims and sand between their toes – headed by Crete with Elafonissi and Balos, Zakynthos with Navagio, Milos with Sarakiniko and Kleftiko, Naxos and Mykonos for huge sandy bays, and Lefkada with Porto Katsiki. Ideal if you want iconic photos and easy bathing.
Less suited to those who want culture over coastline. If you want big archaeological sites, hill villages and nightlife right on your doorstep every night, or you dislike organised sunbeds, beach bars and windy afternoons, a more town-based or sheltered island will be more comfortable.
What to keep in mind
The most beautiful beaches are often the busiest and most seasonal. Many of the headline beaches need a car plus a short boat or a 10 to 20 minute walk down steps with no shade, and most islands have direct UK flights of 3 to 4.5 hours May to October or ferries of 1 to 6 hours from Athens.
On the ground plan for sun and wind. In July and August organised beaches charge 20 to 60 euros for a pair of sunbeds and fill by 11am, unorganised coves have no bar, toilet or lifeguard, and the afternoon meltemi wind can make the sea choppy on exposed coasts. Early morning or late afternoon is best for light, space and calmer water.
