Who it suits and why

Best for travellers who want the classic Greek island experience made easy. These islands suit those who love choice, buzz and iconic sights – headed by Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, Santorini, Mykonos, Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Kos which together take over 80 percent of visitors. Ideal if you want direct flights, hundreds of hotels, organised beaches, famous sunsets and nightlife all in one place.

Less suited to those who want quiet and off-grid. If you want empty coves with no sunbeds, harbours with two tavernas and no queues, or a sense of being the only visitor, these most visited islands in July and August will feel too busy, expensive and built up.

What to keep in mind

High visitor numbers mean high convenience but high demand. All have direct UK flights of 3 to 4.5 hours with many daily services May to October, and ferries of 1 to 6 hours from Athens for the Cyclades, but accommodation, sunbeds and hire cars sell out months ahead and cost two to three times more than quieter islands.

On the ground expect to book ahead and queue. Famous spots like Oia and Lindos Acropolis need early starts or timed tickets, organised beaches charge 20 to 60 euros for a pair of sunbeds by 11am, and traffic and parking in towns like Mykonos Town, Fira and Corfu Town are difficult in peak season. May, early June and late September give the same islands with far fewer crowds.
