Small Remote Greek islands
Small remote Greek islands are the quietest end of the Greek island map, reached by small local ferries or caiques with one village, one harbour, one or two tavernas and a single mini-market, with no cars or just a few pickup trucks, strong shepherding and fishing traditions, and nights built around stargazing and swimming rather than nightlife.

These islands include Telendos off Kalymnos, Gavdos south of Crete, Pserimos between Kos and Kalymnos, Trizonia in the Gulf of Corinth, Kastos in the Ionian, Arkoi and Farmakonisi near Patmos, Antikythera between Kythira and Crete, Antipaxos south of Paxos, Delos next to Mykonos for caretakers, Dokos off Hydra, Kalolimnos in the Dodecanese strait, Paleo Trikeri in the Pagasetic Gulf, Marathi off Patmos, Gyali between Kos and Nisyros, Levitha between Amorgos and Leros, Agios Minas off Fournoi, Kira Panagia in the Northern Sporades park, Skorpios off Lefkada and Kinaros west of Kalymnos, plus Agathonisi, Oinousses, Psara, Fournoi, Agios Efstratios and the Small Cyclades of Donousa, Schinoussa, Iraklia and Koufonisi.

FYI: The small remote islands where Greece still feels empty
These are the islands that didn’t make it onto the big ferry posters. They are under 40 sq km, have no airport, and have populations between 5 and 400. In the Small Cyclades, between Naxos and Amorgos, you have Koufonisia with fewer than 400 people, measuring just 10 sq miles — island life is siestas, long Greek lunches and leisurely swims. Next to it is Schinoussa with about 230 people on 8.1 sq km, Donoussa with about 167 people on 13.6 sq km, and Iraklia with about 150. All are reached by small ferry from Naxos, with one main village, a couple of tavernas and beaches you walk to. A little south, Sikinos is between Ios and Folegandros, 42.5 sq km with about 250 permanent inhabitants, one asphalt road and a monastery on a cliff. It is listed as the quietest inhabited island in the Cyclades. Next to it is Anafi with about 270 people behind Santorini, and Folegandros with about 700, a bit bigger but still remote. In the far east, you have Kastellorizo with 500 people, 110km east of Rhodes but only 2km off Turkey — the easternmost point of Greece and Europe. Around it are islets like Ro, Strongyli and Marathi off Patmos which had 5 residents in the last census. Agathonisi near Samos has under 200, Psara in the North Aegean has 458, Thymaina has 143, and Agios Efstratios has 270. In the Corinthian Gulf, Trizonia is less than a mile across with 55 people. In the Dodecanese, Tilos, Halki and Kimolos in the Cyclades with about 900 in Chorio are also in that Telegraph list of 14 least populated islands. All of them have limited ferries, one doctor, one mini-market, and very little tourist infrastructure. That is why they stay remote.
Who remote islands suit — and who will want a bigger base
Remote islands suit you if your idea of a holiday is disappearing. If you want no cars, no queues, beaches where you know everyone by day two, and a taverna where the fish was caught that morning, this is it. Koufonisia, Schinoussa, Donoussa and Iraklia suit hikers and swimmers who are happy with a few rooms, simple food and slow days. Sikinos and Anafi suit you if you want Cycladic white villages without Mykonos prices or crowds. Kimolos and Folegandros suit you if you want remote but with a bit more comfort — boutique hotels but still under 1,000 residents. Kastellorizo, Tilos, Halki and Agathonisi suit you if you want the far eastern edge, colourful harbours and total quiet. Skip them if you want nightlife, shopping, lots of restaurant choice, or an ATM on every corner. Most have one ATM that can run dry in August. Skip them if you have only 3-4 days — ferries are infrequent and a missed connection costs a night. And skip islets like Marathi, Trikeri or Trizonia as a base — they suit you only if you are chartering a yacht. If you want remote with backup, stay on Naxos, Milos or Rhodes and do the small ones as day trips. You get the empty beach by day and a proper hotel at night.
