Greek islands with pigs
Greek islands with pigs are islands where farm life meets the shoreline, where free-roaming pigs wander olive groves and beachside tracks, where small family farms keep local breeds for meat and festivals, and where you might spot them cooling off in the shade or trotting down a quiet village lane.

They are islands where the landscape feels lived-in and rustic, with stone-walled fields, the sound of bells and grunts in the morning, tavernas serving local pork dishes, and that charming, unexpected surprise of meeting a curious pig or two far from the usual tourist trail.
| Island | Description |
|---|---|
| Atokos | Small private Ionian island famous for its Pig Beach, where bathers live a unique experience as they swim next to wild black pigs that seem to enjoy human presence, reachable only by private boat or sailboat. |
| Meganisi | Base for cruises that build excitement as they cruise to Piggy Beach, with tours that let you name some of the pigs through the summer. |
| Kastos | Tiny harbour next to Atokos, often combined on the same day cruise to Pig Island and wine tasting. |
| Kalamos | Neighbouring islet in the Inner Ionian where small boat tours from Mytikas stop on the way to Atokos. |
| Ithaca | Departure point for day cruises to Atokos Pig Island, with captains offering a choice of Kefalonia, Ithaca, or Zante or Atokos. |
| Lefkada | Main departure for the piggy cruise to Atokos, advertised as a short boat trip to spot wild piggies roaming freely. |
| Kefalonia – Poros | Starting point for boats to Pig Beach, described as one of the Ionian Sea’s hidden gems. |
| Zakynthos | Often mentioned alongside Atokos in pig beach searches, with connections via longer Ionian charters. |
| Corfu | Northern Ionian base that markets Atokos as too far from Zakynthos and Corfu, but still part of the opposite side itinerary. |
| Crete | Mentioned as opposite side from Pig Beach, showing how far the Ionian pig islands are from the main tourist hubs. |
| Atokos One House Bay | Specific bay on Atokos where yachts anchor to see a family of free-roaming boars and a handful of goats. |
| Lefkada Nydri | Nydri harbour where most piggy cruises depart for Atokos. |

Who it suits and why
Best for travellers who want beaches with a twist and animal encounters. These islands suit those who love swimming with friendly pigs and fun photo moments – headed by Zakynthos for Pig Island with rescued pigs, plus Corfu at Palaiokastritsa, Crete near Elafonissi and Falassarna, Kos at Camel Beach and Skiathos at small farm beaches for smaller pig visits. Ideal if you want shallow warm water, families with kids who love animals, and a story to tell back home.
Less suited to those who want wild, untouched beaches and total quiet. If you dislike staged encounters, crowds around animals, smells, fees for photos or busy boat trips to small islets, or you expect large wild colonies like in the Caribbean, these pig beaches will feel too small scale and too managed.
What to keep in mind
Pig beaches are seasonal, farmed and best booked responsibly. Most are small rescues or farm animals kept on islets and beaches from May to October, reached by 10 to 20 minute boat taxis from Laganas on Zakynthos, Palaiokastritsa on Corfu or Elafonissi on Crete. All islands have direct UK flights of 3 to 4.5 hours May to October or ferries of 1 to 6 hours from Athens.
On the ground check welfare first. Choose operators who do not chase or pick up animals, keep 5 to 10 metres distance, do not feed bread or processed food, and limit numbers on the islet. Bring reef safe sunscreen, water shoes as beaches can be pebbly, and water and hats as shade is limited. Visits are best early morning before 11am when pigs are cooler and boats are fewer, and high winds can cancel boat taxis.
