Greek islands for Backpacking

Greek islands for Backpacking

Greek islands for Backpacking are islands like Ikaria, Amorgos and Kythira — where the bus comes once, the map runs out, and the best beach is an hour’s goat-track away from where you slept.

They are islands where you live out of one bag, trade the port’s chaos for inland silence, end up eating something your host just made because there is no menu, and fall asleep tired in that specific way that only happens when you’ve walked all day in the heat to get somewhere no one told you to go.

Who it suits and why

This is for travellers who want to carry light and stay long. Greek islands for Backpacking suit people who want ferries, not flights, between islands, little rooms above tavernas, and a beach that costs nothing to enjoy. It’s led by Paros and Naxos, because they are the perfect hub and spoke. You get cheap dorms and studios in Parikia, Naoussa and Chora, ferries every day to tiny islands, and plenty of free stuff like coastal walks to Kolymbithres, sunset at Portara, and windsurf watching at Golden Beach and Mikri Vigla. Crete is brilliant if you want one big island to roam, with hostels in Chania and Heraklion, buses to Elounda, Balos and Samaria Gorge, cheap eats in harbour towns, and sea kayaks and e-bikes you can rent by the day. Milos is ideal if you want wild and affordable, with boat-share trips to Kleftiko sea caves for 40 to 70 euro, campsites near Adamas, and free cliff walks at Sarakiniko at sunrise. Lefkada and Corfu are perfect for green and easy backpacking, with no ferry needed for Lefkada as you drive across the causeway, hostels and campsites in Nidri, Vasiliki and Kassiopi, and day sails to Meganisi and Paxos that are cheap if you share a boat. Rhodes and Kos give you history and beach on a budget, with old town hostels in Rhodes Town and Kos Town, cheap bikes to get to Anthony Quinn Bay and Therma hot springs, and night ferries onward to smaller Dodecanese islands. It’s perfect if you want slow travel, sunrise hikes, street souvlaki, and boat days you split with new friends. It’s less suited to you if you want five star hotels and a private pool every night. Backpacking is about simple rooms, shared kitchens and early ferries, so if your trip is all luxury resorts, you’ll miss the freedom these islands give you.

What to keep in mind

Backpacking in Greece is all about ferries, beds, and going slightly off high season. Most of these islands have direct UK flights from May to October, around three hours ten to four hours thirty, or a quick hop via Athens, and ferries from Piraeus are usually two to nine hours and 40 to 95 euro, with island hopper tickets cheaper if you book a couple of days ahead. May to June and September to early October is the sweet spot. You get 22 to 28 degrees, sea temps of 22 to 25, dorm beds for 20 to 35 euro and studios for 45 to 75 euro, and quieter ferries where you can get a deck ticket. July and August is fun but full, with midday hitting 30 to 35 degrees, dorms and studios booking out, and ferry decks crowded. On the ground, base yourself near the port and the beach. Parikia or Naoussa in Paros and Chora or Agios Georgios in Naxos for hubs and cheap stays, Chania or Heraklion in Crete for hostels and bus links, Adamas or Pollonia in Milos for campsites and boat shares, Nidri or Vasiliki in Lefkada and Kassiopi or Corfu Town in Corfu for easy green backpacking, Rhodes Town or Lindos in Rhodes and Kos Town or Mastichari in Kos for history and beach. A ferry hop between nearby islands is usually 15 to 40 euro, a hostel dorm 20 to 35 euro, a basic studio 45 to 75 euro, a souvlaki 3 to 5 euro, and a boat-share half day 40 to 70 euro. Bring a light pack, flip flops and trainers, a dry bag, a padlock for hostel lockers, and a refillable bottle. Book your first night and your onward ferry in August, travel early or late in the day to avoid heat, and go in early June or mid September when you get warm seas, empty coves and cheaper beds rather than full August queues on the quay.
