Who it suits and why
Best for travellers who want to feel far from everything. These islands suit those who love raw landscapes, empty pebble coves, tiny harbours with a few caiques, and villages where life has barely changed. Ideal if you want to completely disconnect and travel slowly.
Less suited to those who want comfort and choice. If you want sandy beaches with sunbeds and service, big hotels with pools, lots of restaurants and bars, or organised activities and tours, a more developed island will be far more comfortable.
What to keep in mind
Untouched means hard to reach and very basic. Most have no airport at all and rely on ferries of 6 to 12 hours from Athens, often only two or three times a week. UK connections are indirect, and high winds can cancel boats for a day or more.
Facilities are minimal. There may be only a handful of guesthouses and rooms to rent, no ATMs, one small supermarket and one or two tavernas that open when fish comes in. Buses and taxis may not exist, hire is scarce, many beaches are unorganised with no shade, water or phone signal, and require a long walk or water taxi to reach.
