Least crowded Greek islands

Least crowded Greek islands

Least crowded Greek islands are islands where the beaches stretch wide and quiet, where ferries arrive only a few times a week, port towns stay low-key and low-rise, and the pace slows to fishing boats coming in, sleepy cafes opening late and afternoons spent in total calm.

They are islands where space and silence feel abundant, with hidden coves you reach on foot, villages where locals still gather in the square in the evening, simple guesthouses and family tavernas instead of resorts, and a sense of stillness where the sea, wind and cicadas are louder than any crowd, creating that true get-away-from-it-all feeling.

Who it suits and why

Best for travellers who want space to breathe. These islands suit those who love empty beaches, quiet harbours and unhurried days – headed by Anafi, Donoussa, Irakleia, Schinoussa, Kimolos, Sikinos, Kassos, Kastellorizo and Fourni where even in August you can swim in a cove with no one else around. Ideal if you want taverna tables right on the sand, walks with only goats, and nights with stars instead of clubs.

Less suited to those who want convenience and buzz. If you want direct flights, luxury resorts, beach clubs, hundreds of restaurants, organised tours and nightlife, these least crowded islands will feel too quiet, too basic and too remote.

What to keep in mind

Least crowded means less connected and more seasonal. None have international airports so you fly to Athens or a hub with 3 to 4.5 hour UK flights May to October then take ferries of 4 to 12 hours, often only 2 to 4 times a week, and accommodation is mostly small family rooms and guesthouses open May to late September.

On the ground be self sufficient. Buses are rare or non-existent, ATMs and pharmacies may be single and close for siesta, and most beaches are unorganised with no sunbeds, bars or shade. Bring cash, water and sun cover, and note that high winds can cancel ferries and outside summer almost everything shuts down.
