What to keep in mind
Romance here comes with remoteness. None have international airports, so you fly to Athens or a hub with 3 to 4.5 hour UK flights May to October then take ferries of 4 to 10 hours, often only 2 to 4 times a week. Boutique stays are small and few – many islands have fewer than 15 hotels – so book 3 to 6 months ahead for May to September.
On the ground keep it simple and self sufficient. Buses are rare so you will walk, hire a small boat or arrange a lift, most beaches are unorganised with no sunbeds, and ATMs, pharmacies and mini markets may be single and close for siesta. Bring cash and sun cover, and note that high winds can delay ferries, which is part of the slow charm if you leave buffer days.
