Islands within 2 hours of Athens suit weekenders, first timers and families – headed by Aegina 40 to 75 minutes for Temple of Aphaia and pistachio groves, Hydra 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes for car free harbour and sunset mansion walks, Poros 1 hour fast ferry for clock tower and lemon forest, Agistri 55 to 90 minutes for tiny turquoise beaches, Spetses 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes for pine trails and horse carriages, plus Kea 1 hour ferry from Lavrio, Kythnos 1 hour 25 minutes from Lavrio and Andros 2 hours from Rafina for wild Cycladic beaches. Ideal if you want swim mornings, taverna lunches and easy Athens returns.
Less suited to those chasing caldera sunsets and big Cycladic party strips. If you want Santorini cliffs, Mykonos beach clubs, Milos cave kayaking and Naxos huge dunes, these close Saronic and near Cycladic islands will feel lower, greener and quieter at night with harbours not super clubs.
What to keep in mind
2 hour islands are year round, not seasonal only. Aegina, Agistri, Poros, Hydra and Spetses run 5 to 10 daily ferries from Piraeus port 12km from Athens centre, fast ferries 40 to 90 minutes cost 20 to 38 euro, traditional 1 to 2.5 hours 12 to 22 euro, while Kea and Kythnos run from Lavrio port 60km south east of Athens with 1 to 1.5 hour ferries 12 to 18 euro, and Andros and Tinos run from Rafina port 30km east of Athens with 2 hour ferries. Fly UK to Athens 3.5 to 4 hours then metro or taxi 45 to 75 minutes to port.
On the ground choose port to match island. Use Piraeus for Aegina, Agistri, Poros, Hydra, Spetses, use Lavrio for Kea, Kythnos, use Rafina for Andros. Hydra and Spetses ban cars so pack light and use water taxis 10 to 30 euro, others allow car hire on island. Last ferries back are 7pm to 9pm, so check same day, book fast ferries 1 day ahead in August and visit May, June or September for warm sea without August crowds.
