Best for travellers who want a proper island holiday but not a full day ferry. Islands within 3 hours of Athens suit short breaks, families and first timers – headed by Aegina 40 to 75 minutes for Temple of Aphaia and pistachios, Hydra 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 for car free mansions, Poros 1 hour for lemon groves, Agistri 55 to 90 minutes for turquoise coves, Spetses 1 hour 45 to 2 hours 10 for pine trails, plus Kea 1 hour from Lavrio, Kythnos 1 hour 25 from Lavrio, Andros 2 hours from Rafina, Syros 2 hours 20 with fast ferry, Tinos 2 hours 15, Sifnos 2 hours 30 to 3 hours, Serifos 2 to 2 hours 30, and Aegina to Agistri combos. Ideal if you want quick swims, Cycladic white lanes and easy Athens returns.
Less suited to those wanting Santorini caldera sunsets or far Dodecanese. If you want Milos caves, Rhodes Old Town, Crete gorges or Corfu Venetian Liston that need 4 to 11 hour ferries or flights, these close Saronic and near Cyclades will feel smaller, lower and quieter with tavernas not mega clubs.
What to keep in mind
3 hour islands run year round with many daily sailings. Piraeus port 12km from Athens runs fast ferries to Aegina, Agistri, Poros, Hydra, Spetses, Sifnos, Serifos, Syros 40 minutes to 3 hours costing 20 to 55 euro, Lavrio port 60km south east runs to Kea, Kythnos 1 to 1.5 hours 12 to 22 euro, Rafina port 30km east runs to Andros, Tinos 2 to 2.5 hours 30 to 45 euro. All operate 365 days with Saronic, SeaJets, Zante and Fast Ferries. Fly UK to Athens 3.5 to 4 hours then metro or taxi 45 to 75 minutes to port.
On the ground pick port to cut time. Use Piraeus for Saronic plus Serifos, Sifnos, Syros, use Lavrio for Kea, Kythnos, use Rafina for Andros, Tinos. Hydra, Spetses, Hydra ban cars so pack light and use water taxis 10 to 30 euro, others rent cars or scooters on island. Last ferries back 6pm to 9pm so check same day, prebook fast ferries 1 to 2 days ahead in August and go May, early June or September for warm sea without crowds.
