Who it suits and why
Best for travellers who want an authentic island stay without competing for space. These islands suit those who enjoy small harbours, village squares, and beaches used mostly by locals. Ideal if you prefer slow days, simple tavernas, and guesthouses run by families over resorts.
Less suited to those who want lots of choice and polish. If you want luxury hotels, beach clubs with service, shopping streets, or a daily programme of boat trips and guided tours, a more popular island will give you far more to do.
What to keep in mind
Overlooked usually means less frequent transport. Most have no international airport and rely on ferries from Athens of 4 to 9 hours, often with only a few sailings a week. Connections from the UK are seasonal and can mean an overnight in Athens in both directions.
On the ground, infrastructure is limited. Accommodation tends to be small hotels and studios rather than serviced resorts, and ATMs, petrol stations and pharmacies may only be in the main port. Buses and taxis are rare, so a car or scooter is usually needed, and most beaches are unorganised with no sunbeds, bars, or water sports.
